What is needed to move heavy loads with JUNG dollies & skates?

The table above is provided as a general guideline for professionals only as the strength per person varies and environmental and operational factors can greatly affect the rolling resistance. It should not be assumed that rolling and turning a multi-ton load is as easy as moving a piece of furniture. Moving heavy loads requires hard work and a lot of force and effort.
The manpower requirements to push & pull a load varies greatly and are mostly influenced by two factors:
- Floor conditions: It is easier to move a load on smooth and level concrete surfaces than on rough and uneven ground.
- Weight per footprint: It is less difficult to move a load on a larger dolly/skate than on a small dolly/skate; as more wheels are available to support the weight, there is less weight for each individual wheel to carry. Since each wheel has less pressure placed on it, the load becomes easier to move.
Understanding Break-Out Resistance and Rolling Resistance
It is harder to get the load to start moving than to keep it moving. The force required to start the load moving from a standstill to a rolling state is called the Break Out Resistance.
This Break Out Resistance is approximately 5-10% of the Load Weight (worst case), depending on the factors mentioned above. This is also the drawbar pulling force required.
Once the load is rolling, it becomes easier to move. The Rolling Resistance is approximately 1/2 of the Break Out Resistance and requires only half of the force to keep the load moving.
Steering
A standard 3-point load moving system is the easiest to steer. The wheels are aligned in the direction of movement and the pulling handle acts like a lever to directly turn the steerable-front skate. Rotating dollies are slightly more difficult to steer as wheels can initially be pointing in different directions and must align to turn synchronously and simultaneously. Tandem machine skates and container dollies are more difficult to steer by hand because the turning force is transferred from the pulling handle into two parallel connecting bars which then turn the skates. In all cases turning while in motion is much easier than turning from a stand-still. And with all dollies and skates turning with a forklift is easy.
Safety First!
Please do not underestimate the Braking Force required to stop the load from moving. If you have ever pushed a stalled car, you know how difficult it is to stop a rolling vehicle. For loads over 5 tons we highly recommend using a forklift to be able to stop the load when necessary. If you operate any heavy load on a decline, ALWAYS use a forklift to avoid run-away loads.

You can move your heavy load with people, a forklift, or a puller. It will require one person for up to 3 tons, 3 people for 3 to 6 tons, and either 5 people or a forklift or puller for a load that weights 6 to 10 tons.
