Which Machine Roller for which application?
Use Standard Duty Rollers for short term projects such as Machinery Moving:

All machine rollers look the same. What are the differences?
A Börkey Machine Roller is available in many variations as every Börkey Roller can be built to best match a specific application. Starting with a base roller construction, each component can be upgraded to improve durability, reliability and functionality. The highest possible quality may certainly be required when moving a nuclear reactor, but not every application calls for the most expensive machine roller configuration as each component upgrade increases the cost.
It is important to remember that the roller selection should always exceed the application requirements for safety and usability, however, consider selecting a cost-effective machine roller configuration that makes economic sense in relation to the application. Hence Börkey has created different levels of quality to suit different application requirements.

Rolling Resistance of Machine Rollers
Roller Size affect on Rolling Resistance
Rollers with fewer, larger diameter wheels will roll more easily than those with more, but smaller wheels.
Wheel Sizes
Wheel size increases with roller size. Rollers are made to run on hard surfaces such as steel. If used on concrete, the floor may scratch. Therefore, consider roller size # 3 or larger if used on concrete or asphalt for lower rolling resistance and less wear on floors.
Measuring the Rolling Resistance
Rolling resistance when rollers run on steel:
#1 - 3v Roller Size: 5-7 % of load weight
#4 - 6 Roller Size: 3-5 %

Weather & Corrosion Resistance
The steel components of the rollers will naturally develop surface rust in weather. Minor surface rust does not decrease the performance.

Considerations When Choosing Roller Capacity
Machine Rollers should ideally be used on solid surfaces such as steel, so the weight is equally divided across each load wheel.
When operating 4 machine rollers on uneven surfaces such as concrete, select a roller with double the mathematical roller capacity to safeguard against overloading due to the load rocking and shifting. If operating more than 4 machine rollers, carefully select suitable roller capacity to prevent overloading in case load rocks on uneven surfaces and shifts weight.
SOLID/SMOOTH SURFACE or TRACK
Example: An equally distributed load of 40 tons, translates into 20 tons to be supported on each side
Capacity needed: 10 tons each machine roller
IMPERFECT/TEXTURED SURFACE
If the load rocks on an uneven surface, one roller loses contact with the load and the weight shifts to the closest roller
Capacity needed is doubled: 20 tons each machine roller
Additional Considerations
Wheels can be point-loaded when travelling over recesses and uneven surfaces ... or when hitting an obstacle
Side forces such as wind may cause uneven weight distribution on rollers resulting in possible side/ overloading
Consider selecting higher capacity machine rollers to offset the hazards of point-loads, uneven weight distribution, and side forces.
How is “Load Capacity” really rated ?

Coverage
The manufacturer warrants that the products are free from material or workmanship defects, provided they are subject to normal and intended use. The manufacturer may replace the product or may provide replacement parts, in accordance with the provisions of this warranty policy, any of its products during the duration of the warranty, if it is determined that the product has a material or manufacturer defect.
Limitations
The warranty does NOT cover damage resulting from improper use of the equipment, such as overloading, accidents, abuse, or misuse, modification, negligence after purchase, ordinary wear and tear, and/or failure to follow the product’s operating instructions or safety regulations.
Initiating a Claim
In the event of a defect in North America or South America, notify Toolwell of the circumstances in order to obtain warranty instructions. Depending on the nature of the defect, Toolwell will offer at its discretion one of two options:
- Replace the defective product. All defective dollies, skates, and jacks must be returned to Toolwell.
- Replace the defective part. The defective part may be discarded.
Warranty Period
This warranty lasts for one (1) year on all Börkey products from the date of original purchase.

- Individual machine roller capacities are calculated based on moving the load across a steel surface (all wheels are touching the floor and the load weight is equally divided across the machine roller footprint). When using 4 (or more) rollers, load may rock on uneven surface, increasing load weight applied to any roller. Therefore, select suitable rated roller capacity carefully.
- Börkey Machine Rollers are made to run on a solid strong surface such as steel. Operating the rollers across concrete floors - especially repeatedly along the same path - may damage the floor.
- Individual machine roller capacities and rolling resistance are calculated based on moving the load across a steel surface.
- The track or floor surface is vital for the safe transportation of the load, not just the carrying capacity of the Machine Roller. Movement on tarmac and concrete is restricted, and the rollers should never be used on uncovered tile. For best results on tile, concrete, or tarmac we recommend putting a steel plate of a minimum of 0.4-inch thickness underneath.
- Machine Rollers with larger diameter wheels will roll more easily than those with smaller wheels. Problems such as high rolling resistance on certain surface types such as concrete, or resulting floor scratching, can be avoided by choosing roller models with a larger load wheel diameter. Consequently, if moving across concrete floors, size #3 rollers (1.2 inch/30mm wheel diameter) or larger should be used.
- Precautionary measures must be taken for use on inclines to avoid run-away loads!
- When using swivel tops on 2 machine rollers, also use tops (swivel tops or rigid tops) to keep the load at same loading height.
How Does This Machine Roller Differ From Other Börkey Models?
Every Börkey machine roller starts with a “Made-in-Germany” - interlocking solid frame design, however, each component can be upgraded to improve certain performance characteristics allowing a perfect configuration for any application.
The standard Börkey machine roller features the Solid frame construction with hardened steel load wheels. These Machine Rollers are specifically made for installation of machines & material handling where the machine rollers are only loaded for a short time and roll short distances. (Models KK, KN and KC).
Hardening the center plate additionally significantly improves the ease of rolling after long standstill under load. These Robust Rollers are made for loads that sit longer on the rollers, roll a short distance but must roll after an extended period of inactivity such as during construction. (Models KB and KA.)
Further upgrading to the Super Robust construction provides superior strength and stability against torsion and fatigue over time under extreme loads and extreme rolling forces. Using load wheels manufactured from hardened 50CrV4 steel creates a higher safety capacity against point loading (rocking) and side forces (wind). The addition of a “channel”-type chain guide to the center plate keeps the load wheels in a track preventing wheels from scraping against the walls and prevents chain damage. These Machine Rollers are specifically made for permanent load carrying, where loads sit on these rollers for many years, must roll a long distance, and must be safe even when subjected to rocking or side forces. (Models KS and KZ.)
By adding a groove into the middle of each wheel and outfitting the center plate with a “center”-type chain guide to run inside the wheel groove wear on the wheels is completely eliminated. This allows the machine rollers to be used frequently. (Model KM)
All machine roller models have “blackened” wheels plus a zinc-phosphate coated frame to provide a durable basic level of corrosion resistance. Galvanization of wheels, axles and links improves the corrosion resistance significantly. (Models KB, KA, KS, KZ and KM). Additional options such as galvanization of frame, stainless steel components and marine & offshore coatings are available. (Models KS, KZ and KM).
