Reliability Report

JUNG Product Reliability Report

Data Period: Last 20 years Region: United States & Canada Source: Toolwell, Inc.

This report summarizes two decades of reliability data for JUNG products, to allow customers to decide on the products’ fitness for use in any high-stakes application.

DEFECTS PER MILLION OPPORTUNITIES (DPMO)

DPMO is a standard to compare quality across products and industries. DPMO measures the number of defects out of 1 million chances. Example: A one-piece screw has one opportunity for a defect. A car with 10,000 components has 10,000 opportunities for a defect.

The highest achievable level is 3.4 (considered statistically near zero).

DPMO

  • JUNG Machine Skates: 3.8
  • JUNG Toe Jacks: 7.5
Comparable DPMO of high-stakes industries

  • Commercial Aircraft Target: 3.4
  • Medical Implants: 250

Relationship between Defects and Failures

"Defects" (tracked by DPMO) encompass all manufacturing mistakes, ranging from minor cosmetic issues (e.g., chipped paint) to major structural flaws (e.g., bent axle). "Failures" are a subset of defects, specifically those that render the product inoperable (e.g., a broken wheel).

FAILURE RATES

The failure rate is used as a measurement of the risk in high-stakes application (also called Hazard Rate).

Failures (Defects causing inoperable product)

  • Machine Skates: 12 in 10,000
  • Toe Jacks: 36 in 10,000
Catastrophic Failures (Sudden Drop of Load)

  • All Products: Zero

Is the near-zero defect rate realistic?

  • 50+ Years of Refinement: Unlike products that undergo frequent redesigns, with new, untested technology and components, such as a car with each new model, JUNG's core designs have remained stable for over half a century. This has allowed for decades of incremental improvements to perfect a proven platform which has resulted in the superior reliability of today.

  • Strain is divided across more components: Each component in JUNG products is required to handle less force than similar products. For example,

    • Machine Skates: JUNG machine skates may use twice the number of wheels compared to many competing products (e.g., 2 JUNG wheels for every 1 in a similar product). This means each JUNG wheel is loaded with only half the load-bearing capacity, significantly lowering the rate of fatigue and consequential failure and improves overall reliability and longevity.

    • Battery-Powered Machine Skates: JUNG propelled skates are designed with twice the motor power and more than double the propulsion wheels of comparable models. This design requires less work from each individual component, which directly reduces the overall failure rate and increases reliability and longevity.

    • Toe Jacks: Standard toe jacks often wear out and fail due to the friction of the piston grinding inside the cylinder. JUNG toe jacks feature additional pivoting spacer technology between the piston and cylinder to prevent this damaging contact, thereby reducing the failure rate and increasing reliability and longevity.
  • Total Traceability: Every product has a unique serial number. If a defect is reported, we can trace it back to its specific production batch and component supplier, allowing for immediate and precise corrective action before defects recur. This process prevents further defects and reduces overall failure rates.
Data Limitations & Exclusions

  • Initial Quality Only: The DPMO and the failure rates reflect the initial and early life quality of the product. While defects and failures are tracked and reported during the entire service life, it is difficult to distinguish between a manufacturing defect and a failure caused by cumulative effects of repeated overloading or improper use over the long-term.

As such, the failure 10 years after first use of a medical implant can be accurately reported; a failure after 10 years of a skate or jack cannot. Hence reported DPMO and failure rates should be interpreted as a score of initial quality only.
  • Battery-Powered Skates Excluded: This report covers mechanical skates only. The same long-term reliability data does not exist yet for electric skates.

Battery technology is a newer, rapidly evolving technology and frequent "under-the-hood" changes of components, and the complexity of the entire system means that electric skates currently have a lower reliability rate than their mechanical counterparts.

Conclusion

JUNG machine skates and hydraulic toe jacks provide a level of reliability limited to the most demanding, high-stakes industries. Because of this superior quality, JUNG products are trusted worldwide. This unwavering reliability guarantees not only superior performance from the start, but also ensures lasting durability, delivering both a long service life and low maintenance costs.
